"Polish society is still traveling the path to true democracy. English is becoming the crux of many cultures. There becomes a need to articulate social problems, provide dialogs and seek mutual solutions according to democratic criteria. However, we need to see our own Polish point of view in specific situations. A young generation, which is highly educated and linguistically prepared for interaction and mediation with others, will perform this role to a great extent. The first volume of this handbook is designed to enable students to read, write, speak and comprehend English; to express his/herself philosophically, logically, precisely and critically in English; to acquire skills in self-criticism; to gain insight into the evolution of the culture and civilization of Europe and a New World. The language materials are directly based on the accompanying readings and are organized into relevant pedagogic topics. Firstly, there is a focus on reading, which includes: expanding vocabulary, recognizing idioms, reading selection and checking comprehension. Secondly, there is a focus on special language skills including: pronunciation, spelling, word formation, grammar and semantics. Finally, there is a focus on speaking and writing, which explains idiom usage and discussion of opinions and ideas. This handbook is very useful, not only for students of English and their English instructors of philosophy, but also for other students majoring in the humanities."
